College Preparation Intervention Program (CPIP)

College Preparation Intervention Program (CPIP) a state funded grant provides financial support for institutions of higher education (IHE) to partner with high need local education agencies (LEA) to develop and implement successful strategies that help low income and underrepresented students complete high school and enroll in college. This annual competitive grant program supports the federally funded Maryland College Access Challenge Grant program as the state matching fund. CPIP, an early intervention program, encourages higher education institutions to form partnerships with at least one high need local education agency. Additional LEAs, community organizations and businesses may be included as partners to provide program interventions that encourage more young people--especially students from low income communities--to aim higher, study harder, and take the courses required for college admission and success. CPIP funded activities are intended to improve the college readiness of Maryland's K-12 students. Examples of fundable activities include but are not limited to: academic enrichment mini-courses for high school students held at college campuses, career exploration research with follow-up activities on campus, professional development for teachers, financial aid workshops for students and parents, and tutoring by college students in subjects such as math and science. If you have questions about the program, contact Andrenette Mack-Augins at aaugins@mhec.state.md.us or (410) 260-4535 The Maryland Higher Education Commission (MHEC) is pleased to announce the availability of grant funds for the Maryland College Access Challenge Grant Program.
Improving Teacher Quality State Grants

The Improving Teacher Quality (ITQ) grant program supports teacher professional development to help high-need schools and districts develop highly qualified teachers and instructional leaders. The program is authorized by Title II, Part A of the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001, the most recent reauthorization of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) of 1965. The 2006 Federal Funding Accountability and Transparency ACT (FFTA) legislation requires that prime awardees (MHEC) report information about sub-awardees (ITQ grantees) to whom they have granted Federal Funds after October 1, 2010.

Grants support programs that provide content-rich professional development for teachers, principals, and highly qualified paraprofessionals in core academic areas (arts, civics and government, economics, English, foreign language, geography, history, mathematics, reading or language arts, and science) or in the use of data and technology to help teachers improve their instruction.
ONE STEP AWAY Complete College Maryland State Grant Program

Governor Martin O’Malley set a statewide goal that 55% of adult Marylanders will hold an associate or bachelor’s degree by 2025. This represents an eleven-point increase over the State’s current attainment rate of 44%. To that end, the Governor and the legislature authorized the Maryland Higher Education Commission (MHEC) to establish a competitive grant program to support higher education institutions’ college completion efforts (HB 70, Chapter 395 (fiscal year 2012), and SB 150, Chapter 148 (fiscal year 2013)).

MHEC, in consultation with the State’s Complete College America Advisory Committee, determined that a competitive grant program supporting the “near-completer's efforts of Maryland public and non-profit independent bachelor’s degree granting institutions would help move the State towards its college completion goal. The new ONE STEP AWAY State Grant Program complements other statewide completion initiatives such as ADAPTS, the State’s reverse transfer program which supports associate degree completion.

The purpose of the ONE STEP AWAY State Grant Program is to increase college completion rates by providing bachelor’s degree granting Maryland institutions with seed monies to identify, contact, re-enroll, and graduate near-completer students. Near-completers are those students who have earned a significant number of credits toward a bachelor’s degree, or may have enough credits for a bachelor’s degree but have stopped out or dropped out for more than twelve months without obtaining an undergraduate degree. The Request for Application is located at: http://www.mhec.state.md.us/Grants/CCM/OneStepAway.asp.
