The Maryland Higher Education Commission (MHEC) is pleased to announce the availability of grant funds for the Maryland College Access Challenge Grant Program. For FY 2011, MHEC has designated a portion of the funds to support a competitive sub grant program called the Maryland College Access Challenge Grant (MCACGP) Student Persistence Program. Higher Education institutions or partnerships between a lead higher education institution and another non-profit are encouraged to apply for funds to support evidence-based services and activities designed to support the college success and persistence of low income, underrepresented, and/or at-risk students enrolled in Maryland higher education institutions. The target student beneficiaries are low-income students and may include traditional aged students, adult learners, minorities, first-generation, ESOL, students with learning disabilities and other underrepresented and/or at-risk student groups. Proposals are due on May 16, 2011. Successful applicants will provide matching (in-kind or other) funds equal to at least one half of the requested federal funds and which will constitute one third of total project budget. The Request for Application is located at: <a href="http://www.mhec.state.md.us/grants/mdcollaccesschallgrant/mdcollaccesschallgrant.asp">http://www.mhec.state.md.us/grants/mdcollaccesschallgrant/mdcollaccesschallgrant.asp</a>.
Improving Teacher Quality State Grants (ITQ) Teacher and Principal Training and Recruiting Fund Partnership Grant Program

The Improving Teacher Quality (ITQ) grant program supports teacher professional development to help high-need schools and districts develop highly qualified teachers and instructional leaders. The program is authorized by Title II, Part A of the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001, the most recent reauthorization of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) of 1965. The 2006 Federal Funding Accountability and Transparency ACT (FFTA) legislation requires that prime awardees (MHEC) report information about sub-awardees (ITQ grantees) to whom they have granted Federal Funds after October 1, 2010.
<br />
Grants support programs that provide content-rich professional development for teachers, principals, and highly qualified paraprofessionals in core academic areas (arts, civics and government, economics, English, foreign language, geography, history, mathematics, reading or language arts, and science) or in the use of data and technology to help teachers improve their instruction. Grants are awarded to partnerships that must include a school of arts and sciences within an institution of higher education, a division of a higher education institution that prepares teachers and principals, and at least one high-need local education agency (LEA), as high-need LEA is defined by the federal law. Other school districts may be included, as may additional schools, two- and four-year colleges, nonprofit organizations that have a demonstrated record of success in providing teacher professional development, and businesses.

MHEC is currently soliciting applications for this competitive grant program. Applications are due February 13, 2012. Request for Application is located at <a href="http://www.mhec.state.md.us/Grants/itq/itq.asp">www.mhec.state.md.us/Grants/itq/itq.asp</a> <br />

College Preparation Intervention Program (CPIP)

College Preparation Intervention Program (CPIP) a state funded grant provides financial support for institutions of higher education (IHE) to partner with high need local education agencies (LEA) to develop and implement successful strategies that help low income and underrepresented students complete high school and enroll in college. This annual competitive grant program supports the federally funded Maryland College Access Challenge Grant program as the state matching fund. CPIP, an early intervention program, encourages higher education institutions to form partnerships with at least one high need local education agency. Additional LEAs, community organizations and businesses may be included as partners to provide program interventions that encourage more young people--especially students from low income communities--to aim higher, study harder, and take the courses required for college admission and success. CPIP funded activities are intended to improve the college readiness of Maryland's K-12 students. Examples of fundable activities include but are not limited to: academic enrichment mini-courses for high school students held at college campuses, career exploration research with follow-up activities on campus, professional development for teachers, financial aid workshops for students and parents, and tutoring by college students in subjects such as math and science. If you have questions about the program, contact Andrenette Mack-Augins at <a href="mailto:aaugins@mhec.state.md.us">aaugins@mhec.state.md.us</a> or (410) 260-4535 The Maryland Higher Education Commission (MHEC) is pleased to announce the availability of grant funds for the Maryland College Access Challenge Grant Program.
