Allied Health Preparatory Studies Program Description |
UMBC seeks approval to offer a new Lower Division Certificate in Allied Health Preparatory Studies. The Lower Division Certificate in Allied Health Preparatory Studies aims to provide current
UMBC students with the opportunity to receive formal recognition for their completion of key courses required for entrance into a variety of allied health programs.
Allied health practitioners as defined by the American Medical Association's Committee on Allied Health Education and Accreditation (CAHEA) are "a large cluster of health care related professions
and personnel whose functions include assisting, facilitating, or complementing the work of physician s and other specialists in the health care system". Specifically, the proposed program aims
to prepare students for careers in allied health including Nursing, Medical Technology, Pharmacy, Dental Hygiene, Physical/Occupational Therapy, and Physician Assistant. The LDC in Allied Health Preparatory Studies will provide a local response to the growing need for allied health professional projected by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, due to increasing rates of chronic health conditions and the demand for healthcare services from the baby-boom population who are living longer lives. |
