Sport Management Program Description |
The A.A.S. in Sport Management curriculum is designed to prepare students to enter the workforce in a sport management career. Students majoring in sport management are prepared for employment in a variety of sports-related professions, including facility and event management, recreation management, the fitness industry, professional sports, and related fields. The curriculum features both theoretical, classroom-based instruction along with a required internship that provides hands-on, work-based experience in the field.

At present, over one third of the student population at GC is made up of out-of-county and out-of-state students, most coming from the Baltimore-Washington, D.C. area due to the availability of residence halls on campus. Offering a Sport Management degree program at Garrett may be attractive to many of these students who wish to pursue a Bachelor’s degree in Sport Management at a Maryland four-year institution.

Upon completion of the A.A.S. in Sport Management, students will be able to identify and analyze ethical, legal, socioeconomic, and cultural issues related to managerial decision making in sport. Students will develop and apply critical thinking and abstract reasoning skills in analyzing sport management issues, apply and evaluate principles of interpersonal communication, mass communications, and public relations, relating to the sport industry. Students will understand the importance of budget and finance, and evaluate the economic principles as related to the industry, and they will demonstrate knowledge of the concepts of management and leadership. |
