Substantial Modification to Molecular Biology and Genetics Program Description
The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine is pleased to submit a proposal to substantially modify its existing and previously endorsed PhD in Molecular Biology and Genetics to support training in cross disciplinary sciences in biomedical research fields. This requires a curriculum change to allow enrolled students to have options for introductory science coursework in order to tailor the curriculum to the scientific disciplines they will address in their thesis work. We anticipate no change in the credit load.  For example, where in the past a graduate student in this program may have limited their thesis work to projects within the boundaries of basic science research in molecular biology and genetics, the change proposed here will support thesis work that explores the use of molecular biology techniques in a second topic area (for example, nanotechnology). A student working in this area will begin their studies looking at basic principles in molecular biology and in nanotechnology to prepare them for their thesis work.
