James E. Coleman

James E. Coleman is a dedicated educator who has wonJamesColman.jpg
acclaim from students, his fellow educators, and the education community during a 50-year tenure as a teacher, assistant professor, and professor of Mathematics.  During this period, he served as:

  • Dean of Men and Math Instructor, S. C. Area Trade School, Denmark, SC
  • Mathematics Instructor, Rosenwald High School, Society Hill, SC
  • Assistant Professor of Mathematics, Morgan State University, Baltimore, MD
  • Associate Professor of Mathematics, Coppin State University, Baltimore, MD
  • Professor of Mathematics, Baltimore City Community College, Baltimore, MD 

In addition to his current service on the Maryland Higher Education Commission, he serves as a member of: 

  • The Finance Committee of the Quarry Lake Condominium Board
  • The Union Baptist Church, Baltimore, MD (Deacon, Senior Choir, Comfort Ministry Chair, Circle Chair)
  • The West Baltimore Democratic Club
  • The Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity
  • The Khayyamites (a social club) 

He was appointed by Gov. Martin O’Malley to the Baltimore County School Board, where he served from 2007 - 2012. 

Commissioner Coleman received a B.S. in Mathematics at Benedict College, Columbia, SC and a Master of Arts in Mathematics at Morgan State University, Baltimore, MD.  Additional coursework included Post Masters work at Morgan State University, and the University of Baltimore, Baltimore, MD.
